2012 Resolutions
The end of a year causes me to think of all that’s happened during the past twelve months. I’ve completed two semesters of grad school. I’ve read thirty more books, from 19th century boys’ adventure fiction and New Woman novels of the 1890s to British colonial and postcolonial “passages to and from India” novels. From medieval literature to American frontier...

Dormant Winter
I tried to go for a more vintage look with my hair and make-up today, inspired by my love for a cat eye and this tutorial. I really don’t know what I’d do without bright lipstick. Once again, I love the color of this turtleneck. It’s rather grannyish, and the shorts don’t really help the cause. I can’t help pairing the two together, though.  On another...

Fleeting Daylight
Yesterday afternoon, I dashed outside to snap some pictures before the sun was about to set. It was only after looking through the pictures that I realized that my heels almost match the piece of tractor equipment. (Can you tell that I don’t know what to call that thing I’m sitting on? Maybe it’s a float).   cardigan—Nordstrom tee, jeans—Gap ...

Christmas Morning
I’ve had this jacket in my closet for years. I used to wear it to school when I was in high school, which I now look back on and think is rather hilarious. Anyway, it’s velvety and just seems luxurious and perfect for church on Christmas morning. I also like the details of the trim and the covered buttons. I also decided to brighten the look with colored tights, a costume ring,...

A Christmas Sweater
I scooped up this sweater during Modcloth’s last cabin fever sale. I think that was in February, so I’ve been waiting to wear this sweater for most of the year. I wore it on Christmas Eve. We had Christmas dinner with my mom’s side of the family in my great aunt and uncle’s barn. The barn was set up with heaters and decorated with garlands lit by Christmas lights....

Starry Bright
This time of year makes me want to wear shades of icy blue. This sweater is a perfect shade of blue, and I love the starry embellishment that it has—perfect for the season. Merry Christmas!   sweater—Forever 21 tee, jeans—Gap shoes—Target

Like Gingerbread, Only a Million Times Better
My paternal grandmother always makes pepparkakor cookies around Christmas time. I think they’re basically the Swedish version of gingerbread, and (in my own estimation), they’re so much better than traditional gingerbread. I look forward to these cookies all year long. This is my grandma’s recipe:  1 c. butter 1 1/2 c. sugar 1 egg, beaten 3 1/4 c. all-purpose flour ...

Winter Haze
I usually wear this dress with black or purple tights, but since it’s Christmastime, I felt much more inspired to wear red tights. It makes the outfit so much more festive. cardigan—J Crew dress—Gap tights, booties—Target belt—my mom’s necklace—vintage bow—origin unknown Look at my chipped nail polish. Pretty terrible. I...

As the World Would Have It
A year soon runs its length and never returns the same, And the end seldom seems to belong to the beginning.  So this Christmas was over then, and the last of the year  followed it, And the seasons went by in turn one after the other.  After Christmas came crabbéd Lent That chastises the flesh with fish and plainer food. But then the weather of the world makes war on winter,  Cold cringes...

Equal Parts Cutesy and Frumpy
Here we have another outfit based on a pair of socks. I really wanted to forego the tights and just wear the socks, and it probably was warm enough to do so today. Walking to and from my final tonight, however, I was happy to have the tights on underneath—it was so cold. Anyway, I’ve realized that my style aesthetic varies between frumpiness and cutsieness. (Yes, I’m...

A Penchant for the Dramatic
I wore this outfit on Tuesday. I subbed that day, and that morning, I had planned to wear the poncho with a different skirt. When I went to zip up the skirt, the zipper broke. Quel nightmare. I was running a little late, and I grabbed this skirt because it has pockets and pockets are always useful to have when subbing. Anyway, what I’m trying to get to is that wearing this white skirt...

New to Me
I love this outfit. The dress is pretty short, and I had bought the pencil skirt from a thrift store and didn’t really know what to do with it. Obviously, it was meant for this dress. The pattern is a little strange and looks like hearts or butterflies, although I will never think about butterflies in the same way after reading Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses. The skirt...

A Theoretical Frame of Mind
I’m writing this after spending the entire day writing my paper for American frontier literature. Today I finished the last of five final papers. My brain is kind of dead. This is what I wore: comfy sweater dress, leggings, and socks. Since I’m coming down with a cold, this was the perfect thing to wear. My brain’s pretty fried. Since I’m stuck in a theoretical frame...

Heart You
I love this bag. A friend that I used to dance ballet with gave it to me. It has a homemade feel to it, and it’s so precious. Other than that, the outfit is outrageously simple. It’s the perfect thing for getting sealants in the morning from my sister (who’s in dental hygiene school), writing about American frontier literature all afternoon, and studying with friends for...

A Shining Star upon the Highest Bough
I love Christmas with all my heart. Truly, there are few things more exciting and wonderful to me than Christmas, and I am so excited that this time of year is here again. I’ve spoken before on how I feel about Christmas trees. I can’t think of anything more inviting than a lovely Christmas tree in the entry to a home, and I love this precious guy. I still stand by my belief...

"I Don't Think You Should Publish this Outfit"
That’s what my mom said to me as I was looking through these pictures. My mom is usually very supportive of all my sartorial endeavors, but she also is completely honest. Honest to a fault, sometimes. As far as her absolute truthfulness goes, I sometimes think she could be a part of William Godwin’s circle—she’s definitely not an anarchist, though. Nevertheless, I...

This was another outfit out of a working closet. Simple sweater, tights, and flats. I love a good turquoise turtleneck with fairytale-style sleeves. I also really like the combination of turquoise and navy. sweater—Norsdtrom skirt, tights, earrings, flats—Target belt—my mom’s *title from one of my favorite lines from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Utilitarian Dress
Today is quite possibly the windiest way of my life, and we all know that wind makes for attractive pictures. Not. I’m also pretty sure that I unintentionally flashed a bunch of first graders today because the wind was so strong and this dress is a little short. Yikes. Despite the wind, I really like this outfit with all of its blues and greens. I also like the plaid of the scarf with...
